Finally got around to watching this bad boy by Denis Villeneuve, a personal favourite of mine, and man did I get more than I bargained for!
What a rollercoaster of emotions this was! A somewhat grieving mother/linguist (beautifully portrayed by Amy Adams, another personal favourite of mine) is brought in by the government to assist Ian (a physicist played by Jeremy Renner…he’s good too I guess) to communicate with aliens who suddenly show up out of nowhere.
They do this under the command of their bossy colonel (played awesomely as usual by Forest Whitaker – Mr Ghost Dog himself, another personal favourite of mine…yeah, this movie thus far is solid).
I think what I admire about this film the most, besides the awesome cast and ambiguous storytelling, which is always awesome, is the amount of work that went into it.
A movie where everyone pulls their fingers out and grafts for a labour of love is immediately worthy of my respect, which is a form of high currency in Hollywood; believe me.
My opinions make and break empires! You have been warned!
Visually, this movie absolutely rocks the house! It never attempts to showboat or overspend, in fact it’s just like its story: elegant and understated. Plus, Abbott & Costello look frickin’ awesome!
Aaron's Spoiler-Free Rating: This movie has had a lot of attention, but I still think it’s worthy of more. A modern sci-fi masterpiece – 8.5/10
Aaron James Waters is a best-selling Pulp Fiction writer who has written more books than he's actually read.
He's also the rotten apple of the group who thinks this whole Star Wars thing needs to hurry up and die already.
