Aaron’s Spoiler-Free review of "Under The Shadow"

Here we have ourselves a foreign language British film (yes, you read that correctly) that has been on my radar for some time now. I remember a couple of years back seeing screenshots of the set on Facebook and even came close to grabbing myself a pre-release review copy of the film, which unfortunately didn't come to anything due to release dates being pushed back and whatnot but that’s not really important.

It had, however, piqued my curiosity to new-found heights, so finally managing to see this highly acclaimed, BAFTA winning feature debut from Babak Anvari was somewhat of an erection-booster (insert visual imagery here).

Under the Shadow follows the tale of Shideh (Narges Rishidi) and her daughter Dorsa (Avin Manshadi) living in their flat in 1980’s war torn Iran, with not only the fear and anxiety brought on by bomb scares, but also a lingering presence that haunts her daughter, known as the Djinn.

Now, I know what some of you might be thinking: take away the historical and cultural aspect and all you’ve got is a cut and dry ghost story, and in some respects you would be right, but this film cannot (and will not be able to, I’d wager) manage without that extra narrative, which really does tie in perfectly with the paranormal element that this film boasts; and boast it should.

What I admired most about this film (besides its stunning performances from our spectacular leading ladies) was how it managed to create something extraordinary with very little, and by very little I mean next to nothing. It is this minimalist style of direction that really makes the mould for me, and separates the “men from the boys”, to borrow a phrase.

We have films that go CGI and jump-scare mad and end up serving us a great big pile of dog shit, yet a scene of a woman standing alone in a room with a curtain moving in the background in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it move seems to come up trumps on the spooky dooky o’ meter.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Rating: Yes, this film as a ghost story doesn’t really give us anything we haven’t seen before, as such, but still manages to shed a light of originality in a dark room where modern ghost stories go to whither and die a thousand deaths. – 7/10

E14 Toybox: DC Heroclix Booster Battle: Rob Vs Joe (Superman/Wonder Woman Brick Unboxing) SNYDER CUT

Rob takes on Joe in a Booster Battle! The boys unbox a brick of Superman and Wonder Woman DC Heroclix, and play the E14 Booster Battle with the contents! For those unfamiliar, here is the scoring system:

Each round consists of one booster each. Before opening the booster, we guess at the rarity of the rarest piece inside, and invite our competitor to do the same. If you guess the contents correctly, that's a point. If yours is the rarest pulled in that round, that's another point. If you pull a chase, whatever points you've already won in that round double!

For an added bit of fun, we've drafted a 600 point team each from our pulls for the purposes of playing a game of Heroclix in the not too distant future! What will we have to play with?

Aaron’s spoiler-free review of The Ritual

Been banging on to see this beauty for a while, and having been such a big fan of the book, I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into it and really thrash it about a bit, like when you see them dogs what catch rabbits and absolutely fucking maul it to death with their gnashers until the little blighter’s legs stop kicking and before you know it you’re eating the little bastard in a stew.

Well, now that that metaphor is completely explained, let’s move on! The Ritual follows our rag-tag gang of misfits as they go out hiking in the woods, a tribute to a friend who wanted to do so but died in an armed robbery gone wrong before he could even put his hiking boots on. So, as our friends venture off into the great wilderness, they find out that taking a shortcut through the woods was a bad idea, as something rather sinister begins to stalk their every move.

Spooky, innit?

Now, as mentioned, I was a big fan of the book, so I knew I had to step into this film with a very open mind and take it at ticket face value as films are somewhat much more of a mass market than a fancy paperback, but it turned out that I didn’t really need to as such as this film is mostly (and I mean about 65-70%) loyal to the original source material, which was nice. But hey, this isn’t a review about the book (by Adam Nevill, available on Amazon or all decent bookstores), but one about the film, so let’s hop to it (something that rabbit can no longer do; the sucker! Shoulda ran faster!)

The Ritual is definitely a standout film for me when it comes to the alone-in-the-woods theme, which plays on atmosphere more than the need for pointless jump-scares, which is always refreshing, as was the writing of this film. The dialogue is superb, and it genuinely gives you the feel that these four blokes have been mates for years with their banter, in-jokes, squabbles and all-round body language, which is also a great testament to fine acting and well-choreographed direction.

I also liked that we are shown merely snippets of the horror to come with well-placed camera angles, lighting tricks and, not to overuse the term, blink-and-you-miss=it techniques that really build up the sense of paranoia that our characters may be feeling, which really sucks you into the story.

Towards the end, it did get a bit too “Hollywood” for me at one point, but this was in no way something that made me sigh and roll my eyes, as it was somewhat needed for the pacing, but didn’t seem all that necessary either.

Still, seeing as this film borrows from one source, yet still managed to make a movie of its own that had strong legs, I can’t help but admire this feat of craftsmanship, so it’s a big yes from me.

I recommend it to anyone who loves seeing a protagonist telling an antagonist to “fuck off!” in that beautiful way us Brits do so well! – 7.5/10

Book Review: Ire of the Void

Ire of the Void
Written by Richard Lee Byers
Published by Fantasy Flight Games
Available now in hardback and e-book

Astronomer and Miskatonic University professor Norman Withers has all but given up on regaining his colleagues’ esteem when a protégé of the renowned Albert Einstein comes to speak on campus. The visiting physicist, with unsettling theories about the curvature of space-time, may hold the key to helping Norman explain the phenomenon of the vanishing stars. But when Norman agrees to assist the physicist with his own experimental conundrums, they find themselves no longer the seekers of knowledge, but those sought after. What creatures lurk in the angles of time, and how can two men of science stand up to beings that defy the laws of reality?

I’ve generally thought that Fantasy Flight novels are highly enjoyable, capturing the flavour of their games, with just a few subtle nods to make fans get a little thrill, but also being well-written enough that they could stand on their own merits. The Android novels, in particular, I’ve enjoyed very much. If you couple that with me having been a Lovecraft nut for over twenty years, then you’ll understand why I was pretty optimistic about this novella.

Then it turns out that the main monsters are the Hounds of Tindalos, my favourite non-deity creatures of the Cthulhu Mythos. Yeah, I was hyped for this one. Fortunately, my expectations were met. While this book isn’t doing anything new - it’s pretty much “Lovecraft by the Non-Euclidean Numbers”, but that doesn’t stop it being as enjoyable as hell. The characters are all well defined, the horror stark without being over the top, and the mystery generally proceeds very well.

Byers proves himself to be a very good writer, here, echoing Lovecraft’s tone, while also ensuring to keep his own voice as well.

As an extra bonus, included with the hardback version of the book are some cards for the Arkham Horror LCG that allow you to play as the novella’s protagonist, Norman Withers. He’s a pretty cool character, and his attached weakness is that he’s being pursued by...you guess it, the Tindlos’i Hounds. So, if you were worried that the LCG wasn’t hard enough, then take him out for a spin. Through The Curse of the Rou-Garou, maybe?

Hardcore Arkham Horror fans will want to pick this up for the exclusive cards, but they should read the novella too, as it’s a hell of a lot of fun. For fans of Lovecraft or the Arkham Files series who aren’t big players of the LCG, you can probably afford to save a few quid and pick up the e-book. It’s a fun story, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Aaron’s Spoiler-Free Review Of Veronica

Saw a lot of hype about this recently, ranging from people saying it was “so scary that some couldn’t even finish it”, to others saying it was the “most original horror film in years”. So with praise like that, who am I to turn away from it?

Based in Madrid, Veronica is a 15-year-old girl who looks after her brother and two sisters after her father dies and her mother works late in a restaurant and is based on a true story from a police report back in the early 90’s, where Veronica and two of her friends play with a Ouija board and then a bunch of spooky shit happens. Not sounding particularly original at this point now, is it?

There have been a lot of Ouija based films as of late and most of which have been somewhat naff, so does Veronica land in this category? I’d say no, to be fair, but as far as the scare factor goes, it probably lands itself in the same ranks. The writing for this film is very well done and the acting from our lead and supporting cast is definitely a strong foundation, especially from our leading lady (Sandra Escacena) who gives a very stellar performance, especially so seeing as it’s her first acting job, so top merits all-round for that.

The atmosphere that lingers throughout the film is also pretty well done, and there is one point in the film where we get our first real reveal of spookiness that’s pretty effective, but unfortunately it’s a high point that comes before the half-way point and doesn’t really deliver much else after that that we haven’t seen over and over again already, which makes the film very predictable and eventually, somewhat of a chore.

Now, going by some form of source material I can’t really hold that against the writer and director too much, but that being said, all we get really is just another teen horror movie about a girl and some ghosts and that one person who conveniently knows loads on the subject that our leading lady can confide in.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Verdict: Beautifully acted, well-crafted to a point, but all in all, just another mish-mash of jam that we’ve all seen a thousand times before. Nothing special. – 5/10

E14 Toybox: DC/Marvel Heroclix Booster Battle - Rob Vs Blake (Elseworlds, What If, Harley Quinn)

Rob takes on Blake in a Heroclix Booster Battle! Each is outfitted with a DC Heroclix Elseworlds Booster, and one other (A What If? Booster for Blake, and a Harley Quinn And The Gotham Girls Booster for Rob)!

The aim of the Booster Battle? To out-guess and out-draw your opponent! The scores work as follows:

Before each pull, we take a guess at the rarest figure inside our respective booster. A correct answer gains a single point. Having the rarest from that round also nets you a point. If you pull a chase, any points you get are doubled for that round!

As we only had the two boosters each, we decided to have a single score for the overall game, making each booster the potential decider for the game! To the victor, the bragging rights (and anyone who guests usually takes a few Clix home for their time as well)!

Will Blake, The One Who Wins...Win? Or will Rob eke out a rare win? Find out in The E14 Toybox: Booster Battle!

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Review of "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

Black Humour and hard-hitting drama are two things that are normally hard to blend. It’s difficult to keep things light-hearted or even heart-racing without one narrative demeaning the other, watering down what should be a strong armada of emotions, but Martin McDonagh manages to keep the scales balanced rather beautifully with this excellent feat of cinematic craftsmanship with a star-studded cast to boot.

Three Billboards… follows the stories of a grieving mother whose daughter was raped and murdered, the chief of police who failed to bring justice, and his racist deputy who tried to find his way in between.

Now, going by what I’ve just said, you would probably think me mad to say that this film had me in stitches, which it did, but it also had me transfixed on the character arcs and had my heart pounding for the safety of the characters too, which is something only other directors like Quentin Tarantino have managed to pull off for me (the kitchen scene at the beginning of Inglorious Basterds comes to mind).

On top of all this, every actor brings their A-game to the table and the chemistry between all of the characters is just straight-up remarkable, and really gives the viewer a sense of history and a believable stance that these people very may well have known each other for years.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Rating: The film isn’t flawless, of course, but the small faults is does have are left in the rear-view mirror. 8/10

Tabletop Review - Star Wars Destiny: Boba Fett Starter Set

Designed by Lukas Litzsinger and Corey Konieczka
Published by Fantasy Flight Games

For the uninitiated, Star Wars Destiny is a two-player Dice and Card game which makes use of Fantasy Flight's Dice Duel System (Or DDS, as it's referred to on the box and in accompanying literature). Using two characters, players can make use of weapons, droids, vehicles and random event cards to dispatch their opponent and win the day.

The Boba Fett variant of the Star Wars Destiny starter set contains 24 cards, and 9 premium dice. Boba Fett himself comes equipped with a pair of dice specifically for his attacks, as well as Slave I and wrist rockets. No jetpack to be found, but maybe that's in the booster sets.

Alongside Boba Fett as a starter set villain comes one of his most fearsome allies, a life-long compatriot and someone you'd naturally think of as his right hand man. That's right...

A Veteran Stormtrooper.

Yes, really.

That's not to say that the character is by any means bad in terms of the game balance, but really? There's nobody else that Fantasy Flight thought might combine well with a bounty hunter? Say...any other Bounty Hunter? I realise that we only see Fett engaging in work for the Imperials within the Original Trilogy, but come on! He's not an Imperial by any stretch, he's just working for Vader.

I mean, not for nothing, but there's a card with Bossk on it in the deck!

Anyway, fanboy rant over. I feel better.

The presentation, as always in these starters, is great. The cards feel substantial, the dice even more so and the artwork throughout is excellent. The art style on these cards has always been strong, and what's nice is that often where it might be easier to just whack in a still image from the movie, the artists instead just recreate it in the same style. Great stuff indeed.

In terms of components contained within, in addition to the premium dice and accompanying cards players can also expect to find a sheet of punch-out-able cardboard tokens representing shields, resources and damage tokens which are used throughout the game. There's also a fold-out rulebook which, while nice, is probably a little big to rest on the table while you play on the main bit. I do like that they integrate the cards you just bought into the rulebook within each set. That's a nice touch, which for me at least adds a little extra to the package and makes it feel a little more personal.

Along with the rulebook and tokens, the starter set also contains a collector's checklist in case you want to go down the route of collecting everything from the set (which could of course get expensive, but this is one of those things that games do quite a bit, and I'm a sucker for it as anyone who watches the E14 Toybox videos knows all too well). I really like the fact that they specify how rare each piece is on the list as well, along with whether you should expect a dice along with it. A nice way to get round any would-be mickey-takers on eBay and similar websites.

Provided you know someone with a starter of their own or a deck. Yes, as promised the other day, repeated here is the main criticism I have of the Destiny starter model.

While it's true that Destiny starter sets are cheaper than some of their contemporaries, the alternatives do at least include enough components for two players to get into the game and play together. Now, granted there are problems that are avoided when you go down the "everyone buys their own starter" route, but nonetheless it doesn't feel like the best presentation if you're looking to get people to play with friends.

Generally, I'm very positive on Destiny. It's a novel system, though it's a little complex owing to the novelty of the Dice Duel System (The guided tutorials on Youtube from Fantasy Flight are excellent though), and the presentation is visually very appealing with all the components shown a great deal of love.

However, of the starter sets made available thus far, this doesn't feel like the strongest available. There's something about the Villain decks that suggests that Fantasy Flight are really reluctant to stick a pair of named villains together, as this "take an established baddie and add a stormtrooper" model also occurred in the Kylo Ren starter pack as well. I'm not sure why that is, but clearly it's not a hang-up they have about the Heroes starter sets. If you asked me to recommend one of the two starters, I'd have to go with the Luke Skywalker starter of the two recent decks. Overall, I'd have to think about it. Maybe a Toybox video in the future!
