The Crazy Train Podcast! Episode 43 - "You Think He Can Win?!"

On this episode of The Crazy Train podcast, host Rob Wade is joined by Blake Harmer, Brad Harmer-Barnes and long-time absentee Ömer Ibrahim! He's been away adjusting to his newly acquired fatherhood, so we talk about that for a bit. Naturally, as is customary on the show, we steer in a completely different direction and end up talking about Sam Neill movies.

This show is also unique in that it was recorded the week before the US Presidential Election, and so makes reference to what *might* happen.

As is often the case on this show, listener discretion is advised, as we end on a story that could sound a bit dodgy if taken out of context. Also we curse up a storm #PrettyMuchStandard.

AJ Waters' Spoiler-Free Review - Battlefield 1!

Ah, Battlefield. This franchise has long been one of those that people either love to the point of daily online play and tea-bagging, or one of those that people think is a part of the Call of Duty series and then say “Well what’s the difference?” when told otherwise. Now, we all saw the trailer when this came out, didn’t we? I certainly did, and I’d be lying if I said the prospect of a World War I game didn’t excite me a little.

I mean, once a month we get a war-based first-person shooter thrown at us which looks and feels just like the last fucking one, but a WWI game? Me dunna fink so, m8!

Now I’m no historian, believe me, and the closest thing we have to one here at E14 is Brad, and he’s off with the sniffles, so you’ll just have to take my word for it when I speculate on this stuff and just take it as canon out of respect to me. We good? Excellent! Now let us begin!

Right, well I’m no stranger to the Battlefield games and I have to say that I’m somewhat of a fan. However, it has not been until now that I have said “I love the new Battlefield game”. And that’s no understatement! I absolutely adore this game!

The campaign was truly remarkable as far as both story and gameplay are concerned, and the graphics are (bar none) the best I have seen to date. There are five campaign stories where you play as five different countries: British, American, Italian, Australian, and Turkish. Each one is just as brilliant as the last and I have to say, bloody emotional. You get invested in each and every character (all of whom are three-dimensional) and each of their stories touch your heart. The maps truly are a spectacle and the amount of detail is…well, you’ll have to see it to believe me because I can’t put it into words.

Multiplayer? Pah! Fuggeddabowdit! Truly phenomenal! There’s one mode called Operations and it’s a team vs team based play mode that cane take up to an hour to complete, and it’s for 64 players! That’s right! All-out carnage! And you think that’s just a load of blokes running around on foot shooting at each other? No, mate, think again. That also includes, fighter planes, bombers, artillery, tanks, horses, landships, field cannons, and infantry! Then throw in some mounted machineguns, bayonet charges and gas attacks and you’ll get just a fraction of the mayhem that ensues! I shit you not, sir!

This truly is a remarkable (and I must say, impressive) game that keeps the heart pounding. Your eyes will dart across the screen constantly to try and keep up with what is going on. The weapons are all true to history, as are the conflicts and geography. Another thing worth mentioning, is the score (that’s the game music, not how many points I got), that really gets the blood pumping.

My only real complaints about this game is that I wish there were just a couple more campaign stories, as there are only an average of 3 missions per story (there were five in all, remember), so I felt a little…not underwhelmed, that would be a very wrong word to use, just…I dunno, like I’d had my starter and my main, but where’s my dessert, fool? Also, as this was an EA game, I was expecting some of their old tricks to pop up, yet whenever the going got tough and I tried to call in my Titan, it just wasn’t having any of it; which was a real shame.

Now, if I can be serious for a minute (I know, this is a side you don’t normally see from me), I feel this needs to be said. This game was made to be as accurate as possible, and though we can never, ever, ever have a single clue of what it was like to be in that conflict, this game truly forces you to respect it more.

When you have to charge over the walls, bayonets rushing in, bullets flying over your head, taking cover from gunfire, hearing the screams around you and you crawl through the mud with explosions penetrating your ear drums, I mean, yeah, it’s great fun, but then you remember “Shit, people actually did this” and you will feel your heart stop for a second.

When I was playing this, I’m not ashamed to say that I felt I had a constant lump in my throat and I even welled up a few times. As much of a good time this game is, it’s a real lesson in both history and humanity. The sheer bravery of those men, as well as the families who worried for them every day at home, is just beyond comprehension, and I salute EA and DICE for making this memorable tribute to those men, and not just from one side of the conflict. As it mentions in the game: “Behind every gun was a human life”. Top respect to the developers, seriously.

So yeah, if you like FPS games but also like your history, then you get a pretty nifty treat. If you’re in it strictly for the campaign (I know not all of you like PVP and that’s fair enough), then you might wanna wait for the price to drop a bit before shedding out on a few hours of gameplay. However, if you’re an online gamer (like myself), then, mate, you cannot go wrong with this (dare I say it? Fuck it, I’m gonna say it) absolute masterpiece! If this doesn’t get game of the year, Ill eat a bowl of Brussel sprouts (and I fucking hate sprouts!).

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Verdict - 9.5/10 – Lest we forget.

Where No Fan Has Gone Before...#3

All my life, I've been a Star Wars fan. I've never gotten into Star Trek. As I approached my mid-thirties, I realised that I should probably actually have a proper go of this Trek thing. So, here is my ongoing mission: to view, consume and report back on Star Trek...the whole shebang.

I mean, how long can that take, right?

The Enemy Within

On Stardate 1138, the Enterprise is on a geological exploration of the planet Alpha 177. Five episodes in, and I'm really not certain what a Federation Starship is supposed to do. To be honest with you, I'm not certain that the writers are all that certain. Between ferrying God-like teenagers, prancing around with rapiers and killing salt vampires I can only assume that the Prime Directive is "Dicking around across space, because fuck it by this point.".

Geological Technician Redshirt #13 is injured after a fall and transported aboard the Enterprise, although Scotty has some trouble with the transporter. Maybe he spilled porridge down the grill or something. Is that racist? Do they have porridge in space?

The transporter equipment appears to be fine, but he notices some magnetic dust from ore samples covering Fisher's uniform that may have interfered with the transport process, and the uniform is decontaminated.

Later, Captain Kirk transports back to the ship. The transporter apparently works correctly, but Kirk experiences some disorientation (embodied by staggering and hands-on-forehead acting), and Scott escorts him out of the transporter room. They are unaware that the transporter activates a second time, materialising a second version of Kirk which behaves more maliciously than his counterpart. This "evil" Kirk begins to wander the ship, and those he encounters are confused by his behaviour but assume he is the real captain. Presumably it's not all that uncommon to see your Captain overacting up and down the corridors.

Scott assists in beaming a dog-like animal specimen from the planet...

...And we need to spend a minute or so on the "dog-like animal". It is literally and obviously a dog with prosthetic horn on its head. It doesn't look like an alien. It doesn't look like a dog-like animal. For context, this is an alien:

...this is a dog-like animal...

...and this is what Trek gives us:

...it's...it's beyond shit. I don't care it was fifty odd years ago, it looks turd. It would have looked turd back then as well.

So, Scotty assists in beaming a dog-like animal specimen from the planet but he and the others are surprised when two identical creatures materialise - one completely docile and the other incredibly vicious. Scotty surmises that the ore dust has caused the transport to split the personalities of those they beamed up, creating a good and evil counterpair. Scott reports this to Mr Spock and then orders the transporters taken out of service to investigate, stranding the landing party on the planet as the bitterly cold night sets in.

Elsewhere on the ship, the "good" Kirk begins to feel uncertain, and is unable to make decisions that could affect the safety of the ship and crew. Meanwhile, the "evil" Kirk, in a drunken state, attempts to bang Yeoman Janice Rand in her quarters...

Ridiculous dog costume aside, this is actually a pretty good episode, and shows that when Shatner wanted to try hard, rather than just do the running gag of "being William Shatner" he was actually a pretty good actor. Aside from some pacing problems that make it drag a little around the forty minute mark, I really rather enjoyed this one. Good concept, good acting...shame about the dog.

The Enemy Within - Grade B+

Mudd's Women

On stardate 1234.5, the Enterprise is in pursuit of a J-class cargo spaceship. The ship overloads its engines in an escape attempt through an asteroid field. Kirk orders the Enterprise's shields extended around the other spacecraft to protect it until the cargo ship's occupants can be transported aboard the Enterprise. This is rather nice of him, and as no good deed goes unpunished, this action destroys all but one of the lithium crystal circuits in the Enterprise's spacebullshit engines.

The Enterprise beams the cargo ship's passengers (three probably hot for the Sixties women, but fashion and changing tastes have not been kind to them) and its captain aboard, just as an asteroid impact destroys their spaceship. A bit convenient, but that happens around Kirk and company a lot more often than you'd think.

In the transporter room, the man introduces himself as Leo Francis Walsh. Like previous cocky and annoying characters on Star Trek, he has a grating Irish accent. I assume it was an executive decision to have all supporting annoyances have the same accent.

The three women who accompany him are stunningly beautiful if you're into that sort of thing, and they distract many of the male crew members of the Enterprise, including ship's surgeon Dr. McCoy and Chief Engineer Scott. To be honest, six episodes in and I've already learnt not to expect so much as a modicum of professionalism from the crew of the Enterprise. They are easily influenced and bamboozled at every turn. The women are supposedly to be destined to be wives for settlers on the planet Ophiuchus III and are introduced as Ruth Bonaventure, Eve McHuron, and Magda Kovacs. This is the future, but the sex trade apparently still flourishes.

Kirk has Walsh taken into custody and convenes a ship's hearing. With Walsh in the spotlight of a truth verifier scan, he is forced to reveal his true name, Harcourt Fenton Mudd, a criminal wanted in several star systems, with a long rap sheet of crimes...

Reading that back, and I sound much more down on this episode than I actually ended up feeling. Maybe I need to just stop being so wound up by the contrivances that force the Enterprise into an adventure, and just start enjoying it for what it is. Once this story actually started to get underway, it was a very enjoyable, intriguing, character-driven episode, which is exactly what I like. Mudd's a...if not likable...then certainly an engaging character. One of the best episodes of the series so far.

Mudd's Women - Grade A

AJ Waters' Spoiler-Free Review - Titanfall 2

Now, I’ve been looking forward to the idea of there being a second installment to this fantastic free-for-all contest of "Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots" for some time and when they announced it earlier in the year, it should come as no surprise that I was ruddy excited about the whole thing. Why, every day I would look at the calendar waiting for October 28th with the sweet sound of Simon & Garfunkel playing in the back of my mind as I gazed with welling eyes.

I found myself constantly daydreaming about the possibilities in multiplayer attrition and new Titan load-outs and – the one we were all waiting drastically for – the single player campaign. But then the day finally came! Yay! Hurray for monsters! We’re all gonna get laid! And I must say, man oh man, was it worth the wait! So, to kick things off, let’s start with the much-anticipated campaign, shall we?

To begin with, you are Rifleman Jack Cooper, a young grunt who dreams of one day becoming a pilot and getting jiggy with it in a Titan of his own. Teaching him is pilot legend Captain Tai Lastimosa, which doesn’t sound like a real name. Tai becomes fond of young Cooper and promises him days of glory to come, but oh no, what’s this? Why, it’s those pesky IMC bastards at it again! Looks like we’re going to have to interrupt this prologue with a motherfucking gunfight! Then BOOM!

You’re up to your nuts in the shit with spectres shooting at you from all directions! Pew pew! Dakka-dakka-dakka! Kaboom! Bosh! Blammo! A whole other array of onomatopoeia to get the juices flowing! And before you know it, due to getting stranded and shit, you come across the damaged, yet salvageable Titan, BT-7274, a bond is bound and you become best of buds! Alliteration: Gotta love it.

The rest, I’ll leave for you to unravel (another great EA game, by the way).

I must say; the campaign was awesome! I absolutely loved the story and got seriously invested in the friendship between man and machine and really did feel like I was a part of a team. The AI is truly remarkable when it came to this aspect. There was also somewhat of a platformer feel to the single-player game which I’m really pleased they added, because with all the things the pilots are capable of (wall-running, high jumps, etc.) it would have been a real shame to not utilise that as much as possible in the campaign. The movement was really fluid and not clunky in the slightest.

The graphics were also stupidly impressive when you consider how much is going on onscreen at any given time (there’s one point in particular where you storm a fortress with a dozen or so other Titans and my word is it exciting). All of the new guns did zero to disappoint!

Now, for you online gamers. Online is pretty much the same thing as before, only with a new layout. Now, I don’t know why, but they’ve changed a lot of how the new load-out system works, which is fine, because there is more stuff to choose from (colours, stencils, etc.), but the way you have to go about it all seems a bit clunky, especially seeing as the old way was fine. Some of that old “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” jibe. Online play is pretty much the same idea as before, but with some added extras and play modes (like Bounty Hunter for example), which is nothing to be sniffed at because It’s basically everything we loved in the first game, but with a shitload more to enjoy! Plus, the maps are great too.

Now, I know there’s usually a load of stuff I complain about with games, but there wasn’t really too much to moan about. However…If there is one thing that could’ve been improved, it’s the voice acting. My word, it had me chuckling like a good ‘un! The NPCs would be standing around chatting, and they would all be talking about the stuff in the same over-the-top British accents. It was great! “Ah, mate! I bloody ‘ate them Militia buggers, I do! Like right proper, mate, I do! Apples and pears, I’m a cockney, butcher’s hook, et cetera, et cetera…” but other than all that, there aren’t really any major complaints.

So yeah, pants voice acting and unnecessary changes to the online load-outs and whatnot aside, this is one hell of a fucking game! Majorly impressed with this one. Worth the wait, and by far worth the price tag that came attached. Hours of bloody fun to be had for certain, with a strong campaign that has some replay value.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Review - 8.5/10 – Your Titan can have a fucking sword, mate. No-brainer.

A.J Waters' Spoiler-Free Review: Vermintide

Before we start, I’d just like to begin by saying that I am a huge Warhammer fan and have been for more than 20 years. So when I heard that there was this game where you could battle hordes of Skaven (or rat people, to the newbies and heathens), I wanted in! What’s great about this game is that it’s enjoyable whether you’re a fan of Warhammer or not! However, like all games, it is not without its faults. Let’s get the shit stuff out of the way first and end on a high!

Now, as you may have heard, this game’s mechanics is very similar to those of the killer zombie franchise Left 4 Dead, where you and a group of friends are thrown into the thick of it and are asked to clear the way of baddies and work as a team to complete the objective. Vermintide is exactly that, straight up - Balls deep into the action with plenty of firepower to make an 80s action movie. With that being said, here are the negatives.

Now, as a multiplayer game, you really do need to be careful about who you have on your team. Ideally, you're going to want a group of friends (or reliable gamers in your online friends list who actually have the game), so that there can be an open line of communication, utilising the “team” element as much as possible. If not, you will run the risk of being thrown into a game via the matchmaking process in which you may well be paired with idiots.

This, of course, isn’t the game’s fault by any means, it’s most likely a result of poor parenting. However, it’s pretty much the same outcome if you don’t have any friends to play with or if the matchmaking system doesn’t pair you up with anybody, because they will, instead, just give you a team of AI bots, which – in all fairness to the developers – fucking suck. I mean, seriously. Don’t get me wrong, they know how to swing a sword, but when it comes to reviving/saving you, they just stand and stare like twisted voyeurs who seem to get off on your suffering.

However, that being said, at least when a loot rat turns up, and you spend the best part of three minutes trying to kill the fucker only to then get a strangle rat lassoing you, the AI won’t steal your hard-earned loot before attempting to revive you. On that, another point altogether. Loot isn’t shared. This is a bit of a piss-take. Potions and bombs and shit seem to be in good supply for everyone, but when it comes to loot dice (a mechanic that gives you a greater chance of scoring better prizes in the post-mission screen), it’s first come first served, no matter who opened the chest, killed the boss, killed the loot rat etc. So if you’re down, everyone can just steal the shit before letting you up, which is fucking bullshit.

Also, now I may be alone in this, but as far as I can tell, each character seems to be pretty much the same thing, only with a different skin. Don’t get me wrong - they're great characters and a lot of fun to play, but from what I can make out, none is particularly different to the other as far as damage, range, accuracy, strength et cetera, which is weird because you’d image the mage would take less damage than your “tank” character and what have you (I know, I’m being racist).

So far, though, that doesn’t seem to be the case. I mean, even the blunderbuss (with its wide crosshairs, indicating inaccuracy) seems to hit stuff pretty well at a distance. I dunno, maybe it’s just me. So really, it doesn’t matter which character you get left with in a multiplayer game, chances are there isn’t anything it can do that others can’t or vice versa. All in all, everybody wins.

Another thing this game needs is a pin-down failsafe. We get it, that when an assassin jumps on you or if a strangle rat lassos you, you want to have the other players come and save you before you can do anything as you’re left helpless or “pinned down”. That being said, after a suitable amount of time, you should be able to free yourself (with a health penalty or something, to keep it fair) because as mentioned before, AI players or certain real players (read: dicks) will not come and save you. Instead they'll leave you to bleed out, die, forcing you to start over again (which is apparently your fault, even though it’s their job to come and save you. Funny that, innit?).

Now, to the good points!

The story is simple. You’re the Empire, Skaven are in your town and you want them to fuck off. No messing around. It's kill, kill, kill! I love it! I mean, don’t get me wrong, they do seem to throw in the odd conversation between the characters to try and give these mundane heroes a backstory that no one could give two fucks about. We can’t blame them for trying. The baddies are great in this game, too. They haven’t strayed away from the original monsters which I love! You have your normal foot soldiers and gutter-runners, assassins (the pricks who can pin you down), slave masters (that can lasso you, the pricks), ogres (which are rat monsters on steroids and act as their tanks, the pricks), and plenty of others that I will leave for you to find out for yourselves (the pricks).

Your characters, as much as they don’t particularly differ as far as abilities go, have a great array of weapons too! Each character has a melee weapon as well as a long-range ouch-maker for good measure, plus the opportunity to find/forge better weapons and armour. That combined with the levelling system give this game a great sense of accomplishment and goal making to keep you interested.

You get the choice of doing story mode, so you can do levels in order and such, or there’s just the quick game option so that you can get thrown in anywhere at whatever difficulty level you want with your mates and ting. Despite its issues, I also like the post-game looting system where you get to roll dice to find out how good your reward is. Plus, the forging mechanic is good fun and keeps you invested as far as farming goes.

All in all, this is a great game to be had if you and some friends just wanna unwind, have a laugh and spill some blood. It’s definitely more of a social game than one to be binged and the buttons are so easy (and the storyline unmemorable, in a good way) that you can literally leave the game for ages and come back to it without getting enraged and confused. The only thing I would add, is that there is no map or objective marker system, so prepare yourself to walk around in circles in the sewers for a bit.

Definitely worth the price tag (a first for Games Workshop, amirite?). Just make sure you have a reliable team to really get the most out of this game, otherwise it will just leave a sour taste in your mouth.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Review - 7/10 – Good, but don’t go it alone.

A.J Waters' Spoiler-Free Review: Gears Of War 4

Now, as the title suggests, this is going to be a spoiler-free zone as far as Gears of War 4 goes. However, I am just going to go ahead and assume that, seeing as you are reading this and taking an interest, you have played and completed the games in the franchise that came before it. So if you’ve not completed its predecessors but plan to in the coming days, weeks or months, then I suggest you scream at your computer, hit yourself in the ear a couple of times and look away now. Seriously. There will be spoilers.

Dom dies in the third one. See? That could’ve been avoided if you just did as you were told. So are we ready? Excellent. Now then, let’s move on.

As far back as I can remember with the Xbox 360, I have been a huge fan of the Gears of War franchise. The characters, the story, the badass weapons, the way that the Carmine family can’t even soldier, and even the varieties of Locust that try to drink your bloodzies. There have been plenty of games that provide you with deep character profiles, customisable mechanics, plot twists, alternative endings with multiple choice decisions, breath-taking cinematics and OSTs that just make your heart pound.

By contrast, Gears of War said ‘Fuck all that!’ and just gave you balls-deep gun action until your thumbs hurt. And that’s all we’ve come to expect from The Coalition (and formerly Epic Games) when it comes to this particular co-op friendly series that gamers across the globe have had such an amazing relationship with. However, like all relationships, we’ve noticed that this certain love of ours has picked up some very annoying habits along the way.

Let’s start from the beginning. Gears of War 4 takes place 25 years after the war against the Locust has ended and all is well in the world. Well, sort of. Marcus’ kid takes the lead role and he is somewhat of a shit, running around with some raggedy-arsed “outsiders” (their word, not mine) and stealing stuff from the COG for a living. So with that, you get to fight some COG-Manufactured robots (after all, we can’t have you killing living members of the COG, that would defeat the purpose) and it’s a mechanic I found to be a breath of fresh air into this very linear but lovable franchise. But wait…

Shortly into the game I found that I cared very little about the main characters, a new trio going by the names JD (that’s Marcus’s kid), Kait and Del. JD is a very two-dimensional character that I personally couldn’t stand. I don’t know what it was, but I just couldn’t relate to the guy. Kait, probably the best of the bunch, was a character with potential, but whose only function (at the fault of the developers) seemed to be to appeal to female players. I mean that in the most cynical way possible, in a way that almost seemed alienating, as though she was created by a bunch of guys who knew nothing about what women wanted, but thought “Yeah, that’ll keep the feminists off our backs!"

It's to the point that it made her quite unlikable, and without going into too much depth there's a bit in a hospital that feels particularly clunky. It's a shame because she seems to be the only character who has more than one level to her personality. As for the character Del, well, he’s just your “Ah hell no” or “oh dayum!” comic relief black guy that, again, just gave me the impression that all the developers were not only all-male but also all-white, and maybe didn't know any black people apart from those off the TV. To sum up, the characters were crap. It's a shame, because I loved all the older characters in the past games, including all those Carmines that kept dying.

Another thing about these characters is that they tell way, WAY too many jokes all the time which just made them so irritating that I wanted nothing more than to brush their teeth with wire brush angle grinders until they finally stopped twitching and gave in to the sweet release of death. When they weren’t making crap jokes, they were constantly repeating themselves with poorly-timed audio bites. One in particular was Kait forever saying “Get back in your pod!” every fucking time she killed something, which made me want to put her in the naughty corner to think about what she’s done and that she’s not allowed to leave until all the Locust are dead. All of them. Every last one of them. And when I say ‘poorly-timed’, I mean exactly that. For example, you’d be in the middle of a firefight, bullets flying everywhere, you’ve already dropped six Locust and someone will suddenly blurt out “we’ve got a Locust!”. Really? You think so? Because I would never have fucking guessed! And don’t get me started on the AI. Too late! I’ve started!

In the old days, it was a pretty level playing field. Everyone shot at everyone and everything was fun, furious – but fair – mayhem. Nope. Not anymore. Now the baddies will come after YOU. And just YOU. They don’t care about the other Gears shooting at them anymore. In fact, they will even barge past the other Gears, completely ignoring them, just to come after you, which sucks. Another crap mechanic of this game was the new Storm flares they have. This isn’t a flare you throw at things. No, no, no, this is an electrical storm that they keep trying to use as a plot device every few chapters because they can’t be arsed to think of anything else to throw the game off balance. Plus, when it comes to your teammates reviving you, they will (6 times out of 10) run over to you, and just stare at you while you bleed out.

You think I hate this game. Don’t you?

Well, on to the good stuff!

I have to say, as far as the baddies go, there are some awesome new additions thrown in to keep the combat fresh and playful, like, seriously! Whether it’s the comical – yet somewhat terrifying – juvies that come at you 30 at a time at great speed, the new pouncers and snatchers that take hella damage and don’t take no for an answer, or what are called Carriers (and not for the reasons you think), I loved them all! Plus, as I mentioned before, you get to fight robots! Yes! Sounds mad, doesn’t it? But it works! And you fight them with what, you might ask? I’ll tell you what: awesome new guns! Man oh man, the new guns for this latest offering in the Gears franchise will make you wonder how you coped without them all this time! They are bangin’! I really was impressed with the new arsenal of snipers, assault weapons, explosives and more!

Also if you’re that way inclined, the online gaming side of it is stupidly fun! This is smooth, frantic PVP that the likes of Gears has not quite nailed like this before and I have to say I was stupidly impressed with how fluid the online gaming element was (even more so than the campaign, so what does that tell ya?). I think there can be hours of fun to be had with just the online mode ‘Horde 3.0’ where you take on wave after wave after wave of baddies with your mates (or strangers) with new defenses, those delicious new weapons I told you about, and razor-sharp performance. Ruddy top, that is, guvnor!

So all in all, I think the story and new characters were literally thrown together overnight on this one, which is a real shame, because like I’d mentioned before, I am a huge GOW fan and have been since day one, so this was kind of a let-down as far as the main story is concerned. However, the price tag is redeemed (for me, at least) with the fantastic online modes that are on offer. It’s just a shame we had to wait so long for such a wet bag of dead snakes, and I’ve literally no idea what that means.

Aaron's Verdict: 6/10 - Wait for a price drop.

Where No Fan Has Gone Before #2

All my life, I've been a Star Wars fan. I've never gotten into Star Trek. As I approached my mid-thirties, I realised that I should probably actually have a proper go of this "Trek" thing. So, here is my ongoing mission: to view, consume and report back on Star Trek...the whole shebang.

I mean, how long can that take, right?

Where No Man Has Gone Before

This episode starts with the USS Enterprise doing what it normally does - drifting through space seemingly without mission, in the absence of a solitary doctor to give a medical check-up to. Fortunately for all concerned, but most especially the audience, a damaged ship's recorder of the SS McGuffin, an Earth spaceship lost two hundred years earlier, is found. Its recordings are incomplete, which is a little annoying, as it's a fucking recorder...but it reveals that the Valiant had been swept from its path by a "magnetic space storm," and that the crew had frantically searched for information about ESP in the ship's library computer. The recording ends with the captain of the Valiant apparently giving a self-destruct order.

So, this looks like the episode might be a little more space-fantasy that hard sci-fi. With my Warsian background, I'm more than okay with that.

Kirk decides that they need to know what happened to the SS McGuffin, and the Enterprise crosses the edge of the galaxy where it encounters a strange, wobbly-wibbly, pulsing, purple barrier which damages both the ship's systems and warp drive, forcing them to retreat. At the same time, Redshirts #2-#10 are killed (offscreen, to add insult to injury) and both helmsman Gary Mitchell and ship's psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Dehner are knocked unconscious by the barrier's effect. When he awakens, Mitchell's eyes glow silver, and he begins to display remarkable psychic powers.

Watching this episode I noticed a few odd things - the absence of Bones and Rand, the extra characters...and even that Sulu seemed to have a different job on board the ship (check me out, this "Trekkie" thing is easy!), so I suspected (correctly, as it turned out) that this was a pilot episode. There's not much that flat-out contradicts the other episodes, but it definitely felt a little like a rough-draft.

The story is...okay. There were no surprises along the way, I was pretty sure I knew how it was going to progress as it went along. I think the most grating thing was that it was just a little bit too similar to Charlie X, the preceding episode in the series. Had these two stories been a little further apart, I'm not sure I'd have noticed the similarities, but as it stands it's not very satisfying. Production wise it's fine. The cast are obviously all finding their feet, but that's understandable. It's a pretty forgettable story, but it's not a bad one; although a better conclusion would have been nice.

Where No Man Has Gone Before - Grade: B-

The Naked Time

If that title doesn't fill you with apprehension and visions of a naked Sulu running amok, then you should probably schedule a CAT scan, because it really should.

On stardate plifty-point-plifty, the Enterprise arrives in orbit around the dying planet Psi 2000, which is presumably the planet where they make tyre gauges. Though their mission is to observe and document the planet's (presumably acrimonious) breakup, they have also been tasked to locate a research team on the planet that had not been in communication with Starfleet for several months. A landing party led by Mr. Spock beams down, finding the life support system of the researchers' observation post shut down and the team frozen to death in bizarre situations, such as fully clothed in a shower, seated at a control console as if nothing was wrong, as well as one woman who was strangled. I thought for a moment we were looking at an Outpost #31 type scenario, but apparently not.

One Enterprise crewman, Redshirt #11, removes his environmental suit glove to scratch his nose, breaking all number of HAZMAT procedures and regulations, and comes in contact with a strange red liquid. The landing party is beamed back to the ship and quarantined by Chief Medical Officer Dr. McCoy. McCoy finds no medical issues with them and allows them to return to duty.

After returning to the Enterprise, going through decontamination and being cleared by Dr. McCoy, McDontbother begins to exhibit depression symptoms, prompting Mr. Spock to observe that he has a higher than normal quotient of self-doubt. He acts irrationally, expressing hostility towards other crew members in a crew lounge, ultimately threatening Sulu and Redshirt #12 with a knife.

Man, this is a weird-arse episode. I really wanted to like it, but so many parts of it just felt so disjointed that I just really struggled to bear with it all the way through. The main villain of the piece isn't actively malicious, he's just affected by the red liquid and thrust into the circumstances. The ending is also terribly rushed, and sputters to a finish.

There were some fun parts, George Takei, in particular, is brilliant in this episode, and Leonard Nimoy is similarly impressive. It's just a shame that when you pull it all together is just kind of goes limp and spurts out the sides like a fistful of play-dough.

The Naked Time - Grade: C

Introducing...The E14 Toybox!

About a week ago, at the time of recording, I put up a poll on the Emotionally14 Twitter page (which you can follow @emotionally14) asking if there were too many shows on the Emotionally14 YouTube channel. It might surprise you to know that we have a significant number!

  • The Crazy Train, our flagship podcast
  • The E14 Gamecast, our gaming-centric podcast
  • Emotionally14 Plays, our place for video game play on YouTube
  • Man-Baby Power Hour, a show about Heroclix unboxing where I look for particular figures in a brick
  • Blind Bag Battle, an unboxing show which pits two gladiators in a one-on-one contest using Heroclix Gravity feeds
  • Rob Unboxes A Zbox, a show where I...unbox a Zbox.

We've also had one-off videos which don't fit in any of those categories, and highlight videos from the podcasts which also add up to the point where we already have 9 distinct playlists on the channel, and that's assuming it stays at 9!

To me, that feels like a lot to maintain, so I can only imagine how difficult it is for you, the fine viewing public, to find what you're looking for on the Emotionally14 YouTube channel.

I have, therefore, come up with a solution which I think will make life easier. Over the coming videos, several of the Emotionally14 YouTube projects will be brought together under a more common banner...Presenting...The E14 Toybox.

The E14 Toybox

The E14 Toybox will incorporate anything where we're acquiring or enthusing about fun stuff, and at its core will combine the Man-Baby Power Hour, Blind Bag Battle and Rob Unboxes a Zbox. It's also got room to house other videos. For instance, if we'd had the Toybox back when we uploaded our very first video, opening LEGO minifigures, they could have gone in there.

The Toybox will also (hopefully) provide more frequent video updates, rather than the more sporadic stuff we've done in regards to these three video series. Ideally I'd like to put something up weekly, although I realise that's not always doable so I'm not saying definitely yes or no at this point.

So, the good news is that:

  • For those of you who thought there were too many shows to keep up with, you've got a more focused set of videos in fewer playlists.
  • For those of you who thought there wasn't enough stuff on the YouTube channel, we should hopefully be able to provide more frequent videos.
  • For those of you who thought the number of shows was about right, none of the content formats are going anywhere. There will still be unboxing of subscription boxes, there will still be unboxing of Heroclix and there will still be Blind Bag Battles!

So hopefully, everybody wins!

Look out for the first E14 Toybox video, which should most likely be the August Zbox (delivered a little later than hoped mainly due to this ongoing rethink of the video series) and let us know what you think of the change in the comments below, or by tweeting us @emotionally14 - you can also tweet me @RobWadeVision! Whether you love the name or not, rest assured that Emotionally14 is still keen to remain the home of content For the Permanently Teenaged.

Where No Fan Has Gone Before #1

All my life, I've been a Star Wars fan. By "fan", I mean I quote the movies once a day, read almost all of the old "Expanded Universe" novels and a fair selection of the comics. I have GM'd a Star Wars RPG campaign, regularly play X-Wing, Armada and Imperial Assault, dig the hell out of the new movies, TV shows, books and comics. My Star Wars DVDs are covered in autographs I've collected, and I have a 7" long Star Wars tattoo. Star Wars is my thing. Always has been, and always will be.

I say this not to toot my own horn, proclaiming myself to be Best Fan: The Biggest Fan In All The Galaxy, but just as a bit of background. I'm also pretty into Middle-Earth and Marvel, but Star Wars is my Number One.

I've never gotten into Star Trek. I know that it's supposedly the big "rival" to The Wars, but we all know that that's not really the case. I've seen all the movies, and have probably caught a few episodes of the TV show as a kid (there's one where Kirk fights a Bossk looking monster called a "Gorn", I remember liking that one), but so long ago that I don't really remember them. I know the names of the crew of the original series, most of The Next Generation, and could probably name the captains for the others (Sisko, Janeway and...Bakula?). However, I am, for all intents and purposes, a Star Trek noob.

In the past I'd made throwaway gags of the Fanboys kind about Trekkies/Trekkers, but as I approached my mid-thirties I realised that I should probably actually have a proper go of this Trek thing. So, here is my ongoing mission: to view, consume and report back on Star Trek...the whole shebang.

I mean, how long can that take, right?

530+ hours, you say?

Spoiler Warning: I'll be doing my best to keep major plot points spoiler-free, but I am kind of reviewing these, so some details may be revealed. I may refer to earlier episodes/movies in the series with the assumption that you have seen them. In Star Wars terms, if I was reviewing Return of the Jedi, I wouldn't include spoilers for Return of the Jedi, but it could (and probably would) be written with the assumption you'd seen The Empire Strikes Back.

The Man Trap

So, my first proper voyage unto the frontier of finality...

The Man Trap is actually a pretty good intro to the series. The Enterprise rocks up at a planet named M-113 to provide medical exams for a Professor Crater and his wife Nancy, who operate a research station there. Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy and Redshirt #1 transport to the surface as Kirk teases McCoy because he was totally knocking off the Professor's wife about ten years previously. When the lads from the Enterprise arrive at the research station, each of them sees Nancy differently: McCoy as she was when he first met her, Kirk as she should look accounting for her age, and Redshirt #1 as a totally different hot woman.

Kirk sends the spaced-out and easily hypnotised Redshirt #1 outside...but when Nancy goes out to fetch her husband, she beckons Redshirt #1 to follow her.

When Professor Crater arrives, he gets more than a little cantankerous, informing the crew that all they need is salt tablets. Before Dr McCoy can finish his medical tests, however, they hear a scream from outside. They find Redshirt #1 dead, with red ring-like mottling on his face and a plant root visible in his mouth...Nancy tells them that she was unable to stop Redshirt #1 from tasting the plant.

Back on board the Enterprise, Spock analyses the plant. He confirms that it is poisonous, but the mottling is not a symptom. McCoy conducts a medical exam, and together with Spock determines that Darnell died after all the salt was drained from his body.

Now obviously, all suspicions are directed at Nancy, who is - frankly - shady as fuck; but the Professor himself hasn't been all that friendly towards a crew who seem to be going to a lot of lengths to help him. I mean, there's an outpost in space - fine. It's manned only by one professor and his wife on the entire planet - not so fine, but I'm sure I can bear with it. The Federation sends an entire spaceship to go and give him a free medical check up, and they send down the Captain, the head doctor and...oh, I don't know...Ensign Geoff, because fuck it. All I'm saying is that Professor Crater (because the writer was looking for a spacey-planety name I assume) could do with not being the biggest entitled bitch this side of the Tumblr Nebula.

The rest of the story follows - to be honest - exactly what I was expecting Star Trek to be like. Beam down to a planet, bit of mystery solving, ruckus in a quarry, kill the monster. I was rather whelmed by the experience. I suppose I must have been hoping I would either be blown away or completely put off by the very first episode. There were lots of things I liked: the mystery did develop very well, the pacing was very good and...despite all the knockings Shatner's gotten over the years...I actually thought he was a pretty good actor in this - as was everyone, to be honest. My first proper experience of Star Trek is "not bad". Well...I guess a series tends to take a few episodes to get going, so let's see what's up next...

The Man Trap - Grade: C+

Charlie X

This episode starts with the Enterprise meeting the Antares (another ship, I think...maybe a space station...this is never clarified) to take charge of Charlie Evans, sole survivor of a transport ship that crashed on the planet Thasus. For fourteen years, Charlie grew up there alone, stranded in the wreckage, learning how to talk from the ship's computer systems which remained intact, which is obviously totally normal and hasn't made him a sociopath in any way.

He is to be transported to his nearest relatives on the colony Alpha V, because after the last episode where the entire ship was tasked with treating one fucking doctor, this time the ship which I can only assume would be consuming a truly massive amount of fuel is playing taxi for a single slightly bonkers teenager. I don't know who's in charge of the resource management at the Federation, but they need their head examined.

The crew members of the Antares are full of nothing by praise for Charlie, but seem pleased to have him removed from their ship. After the transfer, they bid the Enterprise an unusually hasty goodbye and depart.

Charlie undergoes a medical examination by Dr. McCoy. He tells the doctor the crew of the Antares didn't like him very much, and that all he wants is for people to like him.

When the Antares gets nearly out of sensor range, it transmits a warning message to the Enterprise, but the message gets cut off before it can give the warning. Shortly after, Spock reports back that the Antares has exploded.

Charlie very rapidly goes full-bell-end developing a bit of a pervy infatuation with Yeoman Janice Rand. He presents her with a bottle of perfume, which turns out to be her favorite scent, which is - obviously - a bit weird. She agrees to meet him in the rec room later, which is where things start to go south.

I really liked this episode. Charlie is a truly great character, as you're constantly torn between sympathising with him, because he's very good at reminding you what it was like to be a teenager...and yet in the next second you can find yourself hating him, because he's very good at reminding you what you used to be like as a teenager. The actor playing him (Robert Walker Jr) is simply superb.

There are some pacing problems, and a really weird bit in the cantina where Uhura and Spock have a bit of a jam on a weird lyre thing and some free-form shanties, because reasons; so it's not exactly perfect.

Contrary to how The Man Trap made me feel, I felt Charlie X was very different to what I was expecting from Star Trek. It was a much smarter, more thought-provoking kind of sci-fi, which moral dilemmas and tough character decisions throughout. And that ending? Wow. Really tugged at my emotions, that did. It would be truly unfair to dismiss Charlie as a bad guy considering what made him who he was; but even though he may not have been a bad guy, he was still a monster.
