The E14 Gamecast - Episode 25: "You Have No Friends"

Rob is joined by Omer and Blake! We talk a bit about E3, including a more lengthy discussion about Battlefront 2, and from there we move on to a question: If you could pick a job from any video game world, what would you choose and why?

If you want to give us your thoughts on the games we talk about, ask us questions or even suggest topics for us to talk about, you can contact us by email using podcast@emotionally14.com, tweet @emotionally14 or find us on the Emotionally14 Facebook page! For our gaming videos, check out the E14 Plays Playlist on YouTube!

Rob is on Twitter @RobWadeVision, Omer is @TheIronTurkOmer and you can find Blake @fucksakeblake!

Note: Apologies that there are some dodgy audio moments, particularly echo around Blake's mic. Recently in an effort to improve the levels, we've been playing with our kit and there are some teething issues. We're hoping we've nailed it down for future recordings, so hopefully in future it won't be as big a problem!

About The E14 Gamecast

The E14 Gamecast is a show all about games. Initially recorded as a short chat about the Titanfall beta, the crew has talked about all sorts of subjects ranging from Eurogamer Expo, the previous console generations and general comments about what they're playing at the time.

Aaron's Classic Corner! June 2017

Hello, fellow travellers! Time for a little something new up in this bitch where your favourite E14 Team Member (non-negotiable) writes a monthly review of a classic! And not one classic, not two, that’s right! Three! Three classics! A movie, a game and an album! And they will all be positive reviews, as I will choose classics that are close to my heart! And this will be an ongoing thing too!

At the end of every month, I will bring you three things I love and why I love them! You get to know a little bit more about me, and I get to revisit some personal favourites whilst looking at myself! So, everyone wins!

The Movie: CELLAR DWELLER

There are many ‘80s camp, horror flicks out there, and they all have their own quirky little charms about them. However, Cellar Dweller has so much to offer that one can’t help but revisit it on a yearly basis. We have a short role for Horror icon Jeffrey Combs, an original premise, a strong cast, great set direction, and a creature that rivals so many others!

Young Whitney is a comic book artist and a student following in the steps of her idol (Jeffer Jeff) at a lodge for other artists and whatnot! However, a curse lingers in the basement, where whatever is drawn, becomes real!

This monster movie with a twist supplies the gorehound with exactly what they’re after, but gives the story lovers a little treat too, whilst all the while supplying some light-hearted comedy too, but just a pinch so not to undermine what’s happening on screen.

It’s a whole bundle of fun that the entire family can enjoy and even better for friends and popcorn!

The Game: STREETS OF RAGE 2

We’ve all played it (those of us who matter, at least) and I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that we have all loved every minute of it! Hours of fun was spent on multiplayer as we swung pipes, knocked people from motorcycles, threw Molotov cocktails and crawled around alleyways! And in Faversham, where I’m from, we call that a bloody good (albeit standard) Friday night!

Now, this game had the awesomely simple mechanic of scrolling beat ‘em ups like Golden Axe, Double Dragon and Renegade to name a few! SOR, however, allowed you to pick up weapons, and work as a team with player 2 by grabbing baddies and letting your friend throw shit at them!

Streets of Rage 2 is the perfect Saturday night game that you can enjoy with friends with a few beers!

The Album: IRON MAIDEN - Somewhere in Time

Personally, this is my favourite Maiden album and I think it is criminal that too many people don’t agree with me! Thankfully, those people must be crazy and dangerous so I must be in good company otherwise. The artwork alone is something to feed the imagination of both the enthusiast and the creative type, it can really give you the mind bubbles of goodness that you need! Plus, the track listing is phenomenal! Sea of Madness, Stranger in a Strange Land, Wasted Years, Heaven Can Wait, and so many more!

For me, this is where Maiden’s musical compositions and lyrical writings peaked and really established the band as a we-oiled machine with good legs and real stopping power as far as Heavy Metal was concerned in those days, and not to take anything away from their later albums, this one for me cannot ever be topped unless they do something very, very, very special. And trust me, Brave New World came very close.

So, why not order a pizza, invite some friends over, buy a six pack, watch Cellar Dweller, plug in the console and play Streets of Rage 2 whilst listening to Somewhere in Time on a Friday night? Sounds like a pretty fucking good evening in if you ask me!

Aaron’s Spoiler-Free review of DON’T BREATHE

Home invasion is something that can very rarely go perfectly, particularly in the movies! But man, oh man, does it go wrong in this one!

Three young adults hear of a blind man who has a small fortune in his home, enough in fact that this could be their “one last score” (I know, but stay with me), meaning they can all move away and start a better life! And hey, the guy is blind! How hard can it be?!

As hard as Stephen Lang! That’s how hard! And as far as I can tell, he’s not even Asian!

Little do these teenagers know that the blind man is a fucking badass with nothing to lose but his mind when he finds out motherfuckers have broken in to nick his fortune, which I guess is something else he has to lose! Among other things…

Anyway, I’m getting off track here!

Don’t Breathe is somewhat of a breath of fresh air (get it?) in this particular genre, which not only supplies a good cast, but also a very strong storyline that isn’t just summed up by a two-line synopsis like most films of this particular field, or anything that has come out in the past couple of years within the horror genre or its subsidiaries.

There is enough going on here within these couple of hours to keep you guessing, but not in a sense where you are left wondering or wanting, as there is a fully stocked arsenal of surprises and even shocks that make you wonder just what the hell you’ve gotten yourself into, when you were expecting nothing more than a home invasion movie gone wrong!

There are, of course, a few eye-rolling moments which is a shame, as it has pretty decent legs for a film that should be strong enough to hold its own, but not so much that it takes away from the film or spoils it at all. However, they really could have done without a few moments in the film, particularly the part near the beginning of the movie where we take a peek into our leading lady’s home life and find a plot device that we have seen waaaaaaaaaay too many times before that doesn’t leave you feeling sorry for her, because it’s nothing we aren’t used to.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Verdict: Don’t Breathe is a powerhouse that has solid foundations and will stay standing for years to come. - 7/10

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Review - "Before I Wake"

Netflix have pushed out some cracking original shows and films over the past few years, providing countless hours of binge-watching and highly engrossing (and doubly net-grossing, I’d imagine) films with remarkable stories, complex characters and consistent value.

When it comes to their original horrors, however, Beasts of No Nation and The Fundamentals of Caring seem to push any chance of a good horror movie into the mud whilst House of Cards and Orange is the New Black stand around it, pointing and laughing whilst squirting urine and period blood all over the already soiled face of shame that is Clinical and I am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House.

However!

Redemption seemed to reveal itself in the surprisingly charming form of a fantasy/drama infused gem of horror that is Before I Wake. The short and skinny of it is that a grieving couple who accidentally pulled an Ian Huntley on their only kid adopt a new one to fill the hole in their hearts and bring their family together again.

Except, when they bring in this little shit home who seems to try everything he can to stay awake (and for good reason), it turns out that his dreams manifest into the physical reality in the form of beautiful butterflies, willow-the-wisps, and even their dead son. However, it’s not just his dreams that become reality, but his reoccurring nightmare too.

Sounds pretty interesting, doesn’t it?

This very Stephen King-esque tale brings about some gorgeous storytelling with stunning visuals that seem to leave you with a sense of both wonderment and terror that each compliment one another perfectly in this very well-orchestrated tale of grief. However, don’t let the depressing premise of this film bite you on the bum and put you off, as there is a massive, heart-warming glow to this tale that gives it a great re-watch value that’s both charming and terrifying. It plays out almost like a fairy tale that is just the right amount of creepy that makes this film a great popcorn movie with friends, your better half, or even if you’re alone, for that matter.

The acting from our leading lady isn’t very up to scratch unfortunately, acting almost as though she didn’t want to be there for the majority (and no, this wasn’t a creative choice by the actress that mirrors her longing for something out of arms reach from her comfort zone and yada-yada-yada, you pretentious fucking prick). The supportive cast, however, are bang on and bring in a whole new wave of very impressive child actors to boot.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Rating: Maybe not one for the masses, but as a genre film, I strongly recommend you at least give it a try if you’re looking for something different that still stomps your craving for horror and originality in a way that J.A. Byona’s The Orphanage did. 7/10

Aaron’s Spoiler-Free (Even Though it’s Impossible to Spoil Based on Premise and Mechanics) Review of Friday The 13th: The Game

The moon is up and so are the tension levels in this absolutely muddy-ruddy-bloody good take on the old school, childhood survival horror classic: Hide N’ Seek. Still, seeing as we’re British and nothing is ever quite complete without a ruddy good moan, let’s get that out of the way, shall we? Excellent! Then here goes!

Yes, I am well aware of the match lobbying system, and yes, it sucks. I fully support those of you who are on the picket lines about this, as I am a firm believer of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and an even stronger believer in “if it’s broke, don’t charge me thirty-two fucking pounds for it”. However, after a quick cheat (on Xbox) by going to the game hub and just adding a load of people in the “Looking for Groups” section, I was well on my way to enjoying the perks of this charming little manhunter (sorry, peoplehunter. Fucking snowflakes).

Now on to the good stuff!

Are the graphics up to scratch with our current-gen standard? Not by a long shot, but unlike some people, I play games for the fact that it’s a game, and if the graphics are good it’s a bonus! If the graphics are awesome but your game is shit, I’m not gonna say “I hated this but the graphics make it my favourite game”. That being said, however, the graphics aren’t bad either! The maps themselves are pretty impressive when it comes to texturing and even size, and the way the moon bounces off the lake (yeah, you know the one I’m on about) gives you that awesome little chill that delivers just the right amount of boner (or moistness - fucking snowflakes).

The music also ramps up the excitement with its random strokes of eerie violin that make you look over your shoulder to see if Kane Hodder is behind you (that’s right, they got one of the (and most famous amongst fans, respectively) actors to play the animated Jason Voorhees).

The executions are well-executed with great execution (couldn’t help it, and I regret nothing) with awesome weapon varieties and animations, from the crotch-chop (exactly how it sounds) to picking up a sleeping bag where a counsellor is hiding and smashing it against a tree. Don't ya just luvvit! There’s also quite a nice little levelling-up system in the game with unlockables and goodies to give this very basic, albeit effective, game some serious replay value.

The three maps available right now are all stunning and the different Jason variations are more than a welcome treat to keep any fan of the franchise smiling. As mentioned before, the game is very basic but that’s what makes this work so well! One friend as Jason, the rest of you go and hide and keep to the shadows as you try and plot your escape from the slow-moving behemoth that is the J-Man! However, don’t be fooled by his speed as his perks can soon have him teleporting and fast travelling all over the gaff!

So, keep one eye over your shoulder at all times.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Rating - Great atmosphere and a bundle of laughs for a party of friends of an evening that’s almost reminiscent of a good, old fashioned movie night! – 7.5/10

Aaron's Late To The Party (But Still Spoiler-Free) Review of Enemy

There are very few movies out there that have made me want to watch the film again straight after my first viewing. Some examples of this are films like Fight Club, The Book of Eli, The Fountain, The Kill List and more recently Alien Covenant (Ha! Yeah, right!). But none have given me this feeling so much as Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy.

Holy fucking shitballs, did I love this film! Now, don’t get me wrong; I’m all for brain-dead films that harbour zero imagination and pay no quarter to original thinking or concepts (weird, I’m suddenly reminded of Alien Covenant again), but sometimes I think it’s necessary, nay, essential to challenge the viewer and really get them thinking.

After all, a great man (me) once said “Art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed”, and I’ll bloody well defend that to the grave with this movie which, quite frankly in my opinion (which is therefore fucking fact) is a criminally underrated cinematic masterpiece.

Basically, if movies were onions, this cunt would make a fine chutney that’d be sweeter than your mum’s and sister’s cootchies combined (trust me, I’d know).

Very loosely based on José Saramago’s novel The Double (it’s literally just the premise that inspired the film, I believe), Enemy is that breath of fresh air that everyone craves after having sifted through shit for the best part of (what feels like) a decade, and is more welcome than that cuddly critter E.T.

The general premise of the film is that our hero, Adam (Jake Gyllenhaal), is your run-of-the-mill university lecturer who lives alone, has no friends and no real foreseeable future. Suddenly, on the off-chance and rare occasion that he watches a film that’s recommended to him by a nosy colleague whilst trying to eat lunch, Adam suddenly realises that one of the extras is his exact double, which leads him down a path of obsession and paranoia as he goes in search of his doppelganger.

The film then bombards you with symbolism, time jumps, more symbolism, metaphors, interpretations, fucking symbolism, twists, turns, shocks, brain training exercises, is there seriously no end to this symbolism? That's not to mention a fucking spider that has another spider, which symbolises spiders having spiders but it’s all just one great spider metaphor that spells s-y- m-b- o-l- i-s- m!

Now, if I were to tell you that this was an easy-going film that the whole family could enjoy, then I’d be downright lying to you. This is a very heavy-going arthouse film and is probably enjoyed in the company of either A) yourself, or B) a small group of friends who are also film buffs (genuine ones, mind, not pretentious ones who think they are just because they read something somewhere and now they’re fucking experts yet don’t know what Dogme 95 is, but play along with the context at hand in the classic No Soap Radio fashion).

This film is definitely not going to be for everyone either, so expect a lot of “what does that mean?” or “Hang on a minute” or my personal favourite “I don’t get it”. This film requires imagination and a pretty creative mind it seems, as it reads very much like a book (again, it’s very loosely based on the novel so the creativity does mainly lie with the film maker on this one), and doesn’t need to rely on cheap gimmicks and shiny objects (yes, Ridley, I’m looking at you!).

So, to sum up, I absolutely loved this film. The characters are fantastic, the hidden clues are everywhere yet are hiding in plain sight, and the story itself is like a web of delightful complication that embarks down a dark, but beautiful, labyrinth of film artistry.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Rating - 8.5/10

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Review of Alien Covenant

Summer is drawing near and the year’s most promising blockbusters are just around the corner. It’s going to be a warm, joyous season of big-screen movies, popcorn and that one girl that won’t stop talking so you brain her and hold up her severed head like the slaying of Medusa whilst everyone in the cinema applauds you for your gallantry.

Ah, it’s going to be wonderful. Which is probably why Alien Covenant was released ahead of Summer, instead of walking proudly among the titans that are The Summer Blockbusters.

That’s right, bozos, Aaron was not amused.

Let’s start from the beginning, and by beginning, I mean that last film that came out.

Remember the first hour of Prometheus? We start with a flashback. Ooh, look at Guy Pearce with his fancy robot friend! Bit flash, innit?

Now we is on a motherfuckin’ spaceship with pods and shit! Look at how close and cliqued this group of people are, with their private jokes and whatnot!

Oh, look at that! A planet! Let’s land on it! Man, look at all these fancy ruins...Oh shit, it’s sustainable for life coz we can breathe and shit! Hold on a bloody minute, there’s statues of massive guys, and check out these holograms! Mental!

Oh, snap, that guy is ill! And that’s an Alien comin’ out of a chavvy! Quick! Back to the ship! What do you mean it’s not that simple? Chaos ensues, you say? Well bugger me!

Remember all that? Well guess what! That’s also the first half of Alien Covenant as well. So, yeah...nice one Ridley, ya pleb. Before you say “But that’s spoilers!” I say, “No it isn’t, because you’ve already seen it and I can’t spoil what you already seen even if you think you haven’t seen it yet, so shut up, Joe!"

One saving grace of this film, however, had to be the cast. They all interacted together really well and actually got you somewhat half-invested in the characters. However I, for the life of me, couldn’t get invested in the story, which is pretty much why we go to see these movies, isn’t it? Some of the special effects were okay, too, I guess (apart from when we get our first glimpse of a Xenomorph and the CGI is so bad it looks like you’re watching a movie on the SyFy channel at three in the afternoon - I should know).

There was also a rather impressive arsenal of plot holes that just left everyone in the cinema looking at each other puzzled. On my way out, people around me were asking the same questions as I was. The film is also ridiculously predictable to the point where your head hurts from rolling your eyes so much, and even more so at the Southern stereotype that is Danny McBride’s character, Tennessee (yup) who drinks Jack Daniel’s, wears a cowboy hat and likes John Denver. Couldn’t make it up!

So all in all, for me, Alien Covenant is nothing more than the first hour of Prometheus (even our female lead is the same character pretty much. Woman, loses other half, reflects on the past, fights against all odds etc.), followed by a montage of fan-favourite scenes from the Quadrilogy.

Aaron's Spoiler-Free Verdict:
An anaemic slow-burner with little to no payoff. 4/10
