Dickass DM

Remember good, old-fashioned gamebooks? They promised all the fun of a role-playing game, with none of the social interaction - what more could a teenage boy desire? The thing is, that while the gamebook became a great gaming experience in its own right, the only RPG it could possibly have simulated was one being GM'd by Satan himself. 90% of decisions led to certain death, and combat was often fatal.

Satan wasn't available, so Brad will be GMing Rob through an RPG based on the classic Joe Dever gamebook Freeway Warrior II: Mountain Run. Brad is the DM, and Rob plays his character, Brag Phoenix.

Catch up with previous Dickass DM installments here!
Brad: An underground parking lot situated below the looted ruins of a Sears megamarket provides just such a safe haven, and it is here that you hide your car. You are tired after the rigours of your journey, so you decide to get a few hours sleep and attempt your rescue at first light. You awake shortly after dawn, your neck stiff and aching after an uncomfortable night's sleep.
Rob: I will insist on sleeping in car parks.
Brad: Little light is filtering from the surface of this underground lot, but there is sufficient for you to be able to take stock of your surroundings and make sure that you are alone. After checking your equipment, you leave The BragWagon and ascend to the surface, where you make a mental note of this location before beginning your trek towards the downtown stronghold of the Angelinos.

MCSPINDLE: Bye, then.
Brag: Laters.
MCSPINDLE: You think there are rabid ghouls down here?
Brag: My knowledge of Fallout says "Yes".
MCSPINDLE: How about Rakghouls?
Brag: Yes.
MCSPINDLE: How about Ras Al'Ghul?
Brad: It's times like this I wish there was one actor linking Fallout, Star Wars and Ras Al'Ghul, but I'm buggered if I can think of anyone.
Rob: I know...Ah wait! Nope, Ron Perlman wasn't in Batman.
Brad: Uh...Rob?
Rob: Yeah?
Brad: Do you remember the awesome 1990s Batman cartoon? The one with Mark Hamill as The Joker?
Rob: Yeah, I do.
Brad: Apparently Ron Perlman played Clayface.
Rob: No fucking shit, seriously?
Brad: According to Wikipedia: The Bastion of All Reliable Knowledge.
Rob: Awesome.
Brad: The heat is bearable at this early hour and you encounter no sign of the city's occupants as stealthily you make your way through tht eshattered streets. An hour later you reach the southern section of their perimeter wall and stop to observe those who are guarding it. They look like a motley group of criminals armed with an assortment of weapons and equipment, much of which appears rusty and incapable of functioning. All that identifies them as Angelinos is the symbol they wear on their jackets and T-shirts: the skull of a long-horned steer.
Rob: Balls.
Brad: After having studied the defences and watchd the guards for the better part of an hour, you decide that the best place to gain entry to the stronghold is through an office block that interrupts the perimeter wall.

MCSPINDLE: Hello?
Brad: The wooden planks that have been used to seal it are warped and split, and gaining entry to the building should not prove too difficult.
Brag: Hello...wait, how can I hear you?
MCSPINDLE: I just remembered you have a CB! Remember? Awesome! I can help from afar!
Brag: Great...So...
Brad: Patiently you wait for the right moment before you break cover and spring across the rubble-strewn street towards the main entrance.
MCSPINDLE: Breaking the law! Breaking the law!
Brag: Why do you always have that song in your head?
MCSPINDLE: Sorry, I was singing with my headphones on.
Brad: The rotten timbers are easily torn away from the front door and in minutes you have gained access to the building. In the middle of the lobby you discover a stainless steel replica of an oil derrick, standing twelve feet high, on which there is an inscription that reveals the former owners of the block:
THE LONE STAR OIL & GAS COMPANY

Brad: In order to emerge somewhere inside the perimeter wall, you must discover an exit on the north side of this building, so you set off in this direction. Beyond the lobby area you can see a row of elevator doors, and two corridors disappearing to the left and right.
Rob: Hmm...This will require some serious tho...Left.
Brad: This corridor services a number of offices and conference rooms before it ends at a wide staircase leading downwards. You descend three floors and discover the remains of a large private restaurant which, along with the kitchen, occupies most of the sub-basement level. A small 'fire exit' sign hangs over the double doors leading to the kitchen and you head straight for them.
Brag: Bollocks, and here's me inappropriately dressed.
Brad: As you are crossing the restaurant floor, your rumbling stomach reminds you that you have yet to eat anything today. Then the thought occurs to you that there could still be some canned food in the kitchen, and you decide to search it before you leave the building. You push open the doors and enter the gloomy kitchen. Out of the corner of your eye you notice a movement.
MCSPINDLE: Ewww.
Brag: This restaurant is failing its health review then...
Brad: You turn around and see a clansman crouching in front of a food locker, trying to prise the door open with the edge of a meat cleaver. He sees you and his eyes open wide with shock. Before you can draw a weapon and fire, he draws the cleaver back and hurls it at your chest. You dive aside, but your reactions are not quick enough to save you from the cleaver's spinning blade. It slices through the arm of your jacket and lays open half an inch of flesh below your right bicep.

Brag: Argh! That was my favourite half inch!
MCSPINDLE: What's going on there? I thought I could hear a small girl, crying?
Brag: She...ran...away...
Brad: You grit your teeth against the pain as you try to stand, but before you are back on your feet, the clansman comes rushing across the kitchen with a knife in his hand. Instinctively, you leap away from his first strike, and manage to kick the weapon away from his hand when he stabs at you a second time. Angered by your moves, he leaps for your throat and tries to drag you to the ground.
Brag: Well, stabbing me would've done fuck all...
RUNNING COMBAT:
He stabs a picture of you and says 'That's you, that is'.
You inform him of all the voice acting parts Ron Perlman has done, and his mind is blown.
Clansman is defeated.
Brag: Yeah, suck it Clansman!
Brad: The surly clansman clutches at his wounds, curses, then falls dead at your feet.
Brag: He fucking cursed me?!
Rob: I kick him.
Brad: Judging from the long-horned skull painted on the back of his leather vest, you have just laid to rest your first Angelino. On the floor close by, you find his weapons and equipment:

Machine Pistol (containing 18 x 9mm rounds)
+2 Knife
And a backpack, which holds the following items:
Flexible Saw
HE Grenade
Water Canteen (containing 1 1/2 pints of water)
Small Blanket
Three med-kits
Brad: In addition to these items, a search of the kitchen also reveals the following:
Rob: Right...
+3 Meat Cleaver
+2 Bread Knife
Enough canned food for up to five meals
Brad: Do you want to take anything?
Rob: Medkits, ammo, water, food.
Brad: You can take the water and medkits, but you're currently maxed on 40 mm ammo, and will have to drop items if you want to take any food. One meal takes up one space in your backpack.
Rob: 40mm?
Brad: Sorry, maxed at "40" on 9mm ammo. I have seen a 40 mm round, but I have been to Bovington Tank Museum.
Rob: Right.
Brad: So, just the medkits and water? Or are you dropping stuff for food?
Rob: I will drop the gold nugget and the spark plugs to take two meals. Scratch that, the nugget and the lighter.
Brad: Before leaving the kitchen, you hide the clansman's body in an empty refrigerator.
Brag: I must remember to do something funny next time I see a person.

Brad: Then you hurry through the fire escape door and make your way up a flight of rusty steps that leads to a service alley at the rear of the building. Your escape from the building goes unnoticed by the few clan patrols that are operating in the area. Alcatraz has brought most of his men up to the central and northern sectors, partly as a show of strength to Mad Dog Michigan and partly as a precaution in case Mad Dog's talk of an alliance turns out to be a bluff, and he is really here to try to take over the city. The further you venture north, the more clan activity you find, and you are forced to stay hidden longer periods as you snake your way through the ruins towards the centre of the stronghold.
MCSPINDLE: I spy, with my little eye...
Rob: How far am I going again?
Brad: You are working on the assumption that Kate is with Mad Dog Michigan, and he is likely to be found where the number of clansmen is greatest. Does that answer your question?
Rob: ...I guess...
Brad: It is shortly before noon when you catch sight of a building that dominates the centre of San Angelo - the Reagan Memorial Stadium. Score of motorcycles and their riders are gathered around its entrance where two large, tattered banners are fluttering symbolically in the breeze.
Brag: Seems like a fair few clansmen might be here...

Shitty Box Art Round-Up

Gladiator Begins

Rob: I feel like this game satisfies several of the E14 criteria.
Brad: This artwork is balls.
Rob: That too.
Brad: Like...More balls than I can begin to describe.
Rob: Well, I'm in stellar company. I'm doing a descriptive piece with a guy who can't describe.
Brad: If you went to the Balls Museum in Ballstown, Masschuballs, when they were having a visiting exhibit on the most number of balls ever piled on top of a series of smaller balls, and you went into the gift shop to discover they were having a sale on balls because they'd accidentally ordered too many balls from the balls warehouse, and purchased some balls from a sales assistant dressed up as some balls, that's almost as balls as this artwork.
Rob: Why would they accidentally order too many balls if they sell balls and have a visiting exhibit on most balls stacked on balls?
Brad: They ordered a lot of balls.
Rob: Or more accurately, exactly how much free time do you spend coming up with superlatives?
Brad: Where is that blood coming from? What is it on?
Rob: I think...PSP? I look for the little clues though.
Brad: She looks like a Speedball Cheerleader
Rob: With tits!
Brad: Speedball? It was a video game? In the nineties? Bitmap Brothers?
Rob: I know what you're talking about. Or are you addressing our theoretical fanbase?
Brad: Our theoretical fanbase is called "Selman".
Rob: I know a guy called Shaun who reads. Hi, Shaun!
Brad: Hi, Adam from Black Sun Down! I assume he reads it. If not, he's missing out.
Rob: There you go, see? We've got at least three. Plus Brian and Doctor Bartender.
Brad: We have over 5,000 people read this site a month, dude. Let's put that into perspective: That's more than you've ever actually met.
Rob: You reckon so? I taught for a year dude, that was a good couple of hundred.
Brad: Yeah, I have a graph.

Rob: ...How did you....How many is it?
Hey, wait a minute! Apparently this gladiator can be a man or a woman!
Brad: What is the term for a female Gladiator? Gladiatress?
Rob: Gladiola.
Brad: The eyes follow you around the room. If you print out a copy and carry it around, anyway.
Rob: I...eyes? Oh, you mean the game cover. I was looking on the graph.
Brad: I'm imagining this is a Dynasty Warriors/God of War thing.
Rob: I'm transfixed, it's like the obelisk in 2001.
Brad: Score for this one?
Rob: 6/10. It'd have got 4/10, but tits!
Brad: 4/10. It got a two, but...tits.

Trucks and Trailers

Brad: This excerpt from the blurb tells you all you need to know about this games target audience:
From the developers of the phenomenally successful Euro Truck Simulator, UK Truck Simulator and German Truck Simulator comes Trucks & Trailers!
This is aimed at dedicated truck simulation enthusiasts.
Rob: So what, it does trucks showing movie previews?
Brad: I hope this has a mini-game where you rape and murder hitch-hikers. It wouldn't be a full simulation if they missed out that vital facet.
Rob: Or there's the mud-flap customisation.
Brad: I don't think this is really going to rival Burnout any time soon.
Rob: Probably not.
This thing has achievements?!
"Keep your flaps clean - 10G"
Brad: I'm starting to wonder if there's a "fallen into" career that they haven't done a simulation for yet.
Rob: "School Janitor HD"?
Brad: "Air Stewardess Simulator"?
"Methodist Vicar '11"
Rob: "Golf Buggy Tycoon"
Brad: "Boots Checkout Girl (inc vacant stare DLC)
"Subway Sandwich Artist"
Achievement Unlocked: Completely Ignoring Salad Request
Rob: 7/10. Trucks!
Brad: 8/10.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

Brad: I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this will be a collection of mini-games.
Rob: This game comes out at the end of September?
Brad: Yes. It's either really early, or really late.
There's only so much mileage, here, right?
Rob: Santa doesn't do much distance on the ground. Ever wonder how he does it?
Brad: Something to do with timezones, I think. That or Nikolai Tesla built him a machine that creates a duplicate him somewhere else.
Rob: That'd be awesome!
Brad: I don't trust these Elves.
Rob: What about them don't you trust?
Brad: I think it's the doped up facial expressions. And the one of the far right is having sex with the side of the box.
Rob: Dude, they're making toys and, I suspect, Wii games. It's not like they're your designated driver. Relax.
Brad: Fine. 5/10.
Rob: 4/10.

London Underground Simulator

Brad: Oh, for fuck's sake. You know what? This actually sounds like hell.
Rob: World of Subways...3? Dude, they made your game. How do you do the "Ignore Salad Request" thing?
Brad: "as you follow a detailed timetable and a myriad of custom missions."
Custom missions? What the hell are they? This game is, by its very definition "railroaded".
Rob: I thought the whole point of missions was that they were linear. Hell, I thought the whole point of subways was that they were linear. So I presume the controls are "on-rails"? Hyuk, hyuk.
Brad: Yeah, this is an on-rails shooter, minus the shooting. Who chooses this for fun? Why not just become a underground train driver?
Rob: People who like on-rails ers.
Brad: It's not like you're playing Guitar Hero, here, and pretending to be a rockstar. You're pretending to be a grumpy, shit-at-his-job dickfister with no ambition or charisma. Where is the fun in that? I'm totally getting Brian this for Christmas. He doesn't have a PC, but he can look at the box and pretend.
Rob: Why didn't we get him a PC?
Brad: And he's got an abacus. I'm not made of money.
Rob: Dude, that had better be one bead. Beads cost money.
Brad: Yeah, he's counting in binary.
Rob: Smart guy. Why's he working for us?
Brad: It is just the two of us he works for, isn't it?
Rob: I assume so.
Brad: I only ask because under "number of managers" he put "10".
Rob: "Dynamic passengers on the platform"?
Do you get to hurl passive-aggressive abuse at people?
Brad: That can be the only perk. Unless there's a DLC level where you have to drive the train through the subway train section of Predator 2.
Rob: 6/10.
Brad: 1101/10
Rob: ...11?
Brad: Probably. I do the gags, not the math.

Delivery Truck Simulator

Brad: What is wrong with this world?
Rob: What is wrong with your ability to search Play.com?
Brad: They really have screwed up this time, and I'll explain why.
Rob: It does help our exposition if you do.
Brad: See: "Time is your greatest adversary as you work against the clock to deliver a wide range of goods before the deadline expires".
I'm pretty sure that delivery vans do not give a fuck about getting things there before the deadline. So, either they've got something that doesn't work as a game, or doesn't work as a simulation.
Rob: Good point; it's the retailer who cares about that. Yeah, but dude: think it through, ok?
Brad: Okay...
Rob: It's hardly going to say "Time is useful but not vital, as you work a full day and try to minimise customer complaints to the distributor, resulting in lower negotiated contracts come renewal time. Your impact will not be particularly massive one way or the other.".
Brad: Fine. 3/10.
Rob: Ultimately my impact will not be particularly massive one way or the other. So 2/10.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

Rob: ...Is he walking through a zombie Mardi Gras?
Brad: I think it's really bad form for them to have taken that photo with the light source directly behind the subject. Didn't they already do a Dead Rising 2?
Rob: Yeah, this is a "Re-imagining". Translation: It didn't sell as well as they'd hoped, and their logic is that they can always just whack their main hero into the game and hope for the best.
Brad: Oh, dear. That...sounds like we're back in the gift shop again.
Rob: So many balls...At least they're doing new missions. I'm glad when they do something that isn't 100% flagrant profiteering.
Brad: Does he have to keep taking Zombrex to someone else's daughter?
"I got you some Zombrex."
"Who are you?"
"I'm your non-canon daddy."
"Wait...so, where's my Daddy?"
"Uh...on PS3, I think."
Rob: "There's an Xbox version of your daddy too."
Brad: See, you would not get away with this ham-fisted re-boot on anything else. They wouldn't re-do just a sequel with a different character for a movie.
Rob: They totally will, one day.
Brad: 10/10.
Rob: 7/10. I like the idea of Zombie Mardi Gras, but that's about it.

Xenoblade Chronicles

Rob: Is that guy made of fishing rods?
Brad: Going on the artwork, there's every chance that this is a Dream Theater album.
Rob: I would buy that.
Brad: I smell JRPG.
Rob: Sorry, I've got this weird stomach condition.
Brad: That is pretty...wow.
Rob: I get so acidic that I can only survive by feeding myself JRPGs.
Brad: Have you seen a doctor? He can probably heal you for half your gold.
Rob: Nah, I'm good. I've got a full complement of Phoenix Downs.

George Lucas Makes Shocking Changes to the Star Wars Blu-ray

With the release of the classic and much loved Star Wars movies onto Blu-ray, George Lucas has once again made several tweaks and changes that have divided fans into those who hate them, and those who grudgingly accept them. Let's take a look at exactly what has been changed for this latest version.

***Contains Spoilers. But if you haven't see Star Wars, you shouldn't be reading E14 anyway.***

Darth Vader cries "Noooo!" when throwing Emperor Palpatine into the core of the Death Star II.

Ewoks now blink with CG eyelids.

The door to Jabba's Palace is thrice as wide as once it was.

During the duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jango Fett on Kamino, the rain now travels upwards, from the sea to the sky.

Footage has been inserted of Boba Fett escaping from the Sarlacc...then falling back in again. This routine is accompanied by a slide whistle.

Han and Greedo now have a full shoot-out to "Duel of the Fates".

During the briefing sequence prior to the Battle of Endor, Han now repeats everything Mon Mothma says, with his tongue in his bottom lip.

Ewan MacGregor has been digitally removed from Episodes IV - VI and replaced with Alec Guinness.

General Veers now ends every sentence with "Ooo-er, Missus!".

In several key scenes, Natalie Portman has been replaced with Wedge Antilles.

The character of Count Dooku now serves a purpose.

An extended scene reveals that Senator Palpatine and Darth Sidious aren't the same person.

Darth Maul now has the voice of Ray Park and the body of Peter Serafinowicz.

Willow is now canon.

During the pod-racing segment, Sebulba's pod has been digitally enhanced to appear as though it is sculpted from fondant.

At several points during the carbon freezing chamber, there are sounds of George Lucas sniggering.
